HAVOC Haven: Will Wade discusses the Rams’ 2015-16 season

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — You didn’t think I’d just go away once the season was over, did you? Not a chance, HAVOC Haven was lucky enough to sit down with VCU’s Head Coach Will Wade to get his assessment of the 2015-16 season. Here’s what he had to say.

“I hit you between the eyes sometimes. People just want to know what’s going on. I think that they appreciate it. There’s nothing hidden behind the curtin.” — VCU Head Coach Will Wade

His take on how this campaign went:

“Overall, I thought the season was good.

“We were picked fifth in the league – we came in tied for first in the regular season. Our first regular season title since ’09 – our first in the Atlantic 10. We were able to get to the NCAA Tournament again, keeping the streak going, six in a row, and then advance for the first time in a couple of years.

“Overall, I think it was a success. You certainly look back and wish you’d pushed a button here and another there that could have won us an extra couple games. But, overall, I’m pretty pleased with where we are and how the season went.”

On future expectations:

“We want to improve and have better seasons.”

Sharing the truth:

“I hit you between the eyes sometimes. People just want to know what’s going on. I think that they appreciate it. There’s nothing hidden behind the curtain.”

Incoming talent:

“You never know until you coach them. We’ll see how things go.”

A leadership void?

“We’ll see how things go. JeQuan (Lewis), Mo (Alie-Cox), Johnny (Williams), and (Jordan (Burgess) can provide leadership on the floor and off the court. I feel good about (Justin) Tillman and (Michael) Gilmore.”

Next up next year:

“Always a challenge. Georgia Tech and Middle Tennesee (are on next year’s schedule in addition to the Battle for Atlantis Tournament).”

On losing to Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament:

“There’s not much shame in losing to one of the top four teams in the country.”

Expections within the A-10:

“Rhode Island and LaSalle will make big jumps next year and Dayton will still be good.”

What’s next?:

“We’ll be right back at it. You make your team in the summer.”

Recruiting:

“We need to get the players that fit our system. Recruit for VCU — we’ll keep after it with that.”

On his players accepting his coaching style:

It is certainly better — the guys know me and know what I’m about.

A must watch: Will Wade’s message to all VCU fans.
