BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WRIC) — The Spiders quest for the A-10 Tournament title begins today at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn N.Y. The Spiders (15-15, 7-11) are the nine seed in the tournament, and will face the eighth-seeded Fordham Rams (17-12, 8-10). The Spiders are in Brooklyn, along with the conference’s 13 other teams, hoping to advance to Sunday’s tournament final and play for a spot in the NCAA tournament. As stated in our preview article, it’s been an up-and-down season for the University of Richmond men’s basketball team, but none of that matters anymore.
According to the University of Richmond’s Athletic Department, the Spiders are making their 14th appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament since 2002. UR is 12-12 all-time, but just 1-3 since the tournament moved to Barclays. Richmond won the tournament in 2011 as a three seed. This is UR’s first time as a nine seed in the tournament. The Spiders are 4-4 in second round games.
The Spiders won both meetings against Fordham during the regular season and have beaten the Rams 11 times in a row. UR is 1-2 against Fordham all-time in A-10 tournament play. Richmond leads the all-time series 16-7.
11:16 — Fore and Cline are pacing the Spiders so far as each player has seven points. Richmond 16 — Forham 11.
7:51 — Richmond extends their lead to ten as Jones get involved. Richmond 26 — Forham 16.
Stat Line: UR is shooting 72.2 percent from the floor.
Deep thought: Fordham is taking too long picking their shots. They have two shot clock violations and one tht made it in at the buzzer.
Halftime: Richmond 36 — Fordham 22.
Stat line: Fore leads Richmond with 10 points. As a team UR pulled down 12 defensive boards, had 12 assists, and went 4-9 from the three-point line.
15:08 — We are seeing a completely different Spider squad in the second half. The have only scored four points in five minutes while Fordham has added 17 as the Spiders are clinging to a three-point lead. Richmond 42 — Fordham 39.
8:07 — Fordham’s Joseph Chartouny (18 points) and Ryan Rhoomes (16 points) have really taken this game over. Richmond still clings to a three-point lead. Richmond 48 — Fordham 45.
Stat line: Richmond is shooting under 50 percent from the floor and from the free throw line (compared to 64 percent and 100 percent in the first half). They are also only 25 percent from the three-point line (down from 44.4 percent in the first).
3:38 — A combination of hustle, good defense, and better shooting from the free throw line has the Spiders in control. Richmond 61 — Fordham 48.
Stat line: Jones now has 15 points, which is his season average.
Final score: Richmond 70 — Fordham 55.
Final thought: Good win for the Spiders — it wasn’t the prettiest, but the goal is to move on. That said, an extended second-half collapse against Dayton will cost the Spiders the game.
