FINAL: Richmond falls at Davidson 83-79

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond’s men’s basketball team is seeking its fourth win in a row tonight as they begin a two-game road trip at Davidson.

The Spiders suffered a 78-70 home loss earlier this season against the Wildcats, who are coming off a last-second loss to George Mason University over the weekend.

17:30 – Davidson grabs early 5-2 lead; Spiders start 0-2 from behind the arc

16:45 – T.J. Cline with a nice touch off the glass, has all of Richmond’s point so far. Spiders trail 9-4

16:15 – Marshall Wood for 3! Spiders trim deficit to 9-7

15:50 – Spiders are heating up … Shaw’Dre Jones makes it back-to-back 3s. Richmond has made each of its last 3 FG attempts. Davidson leads 11-10.

NOTE: Red-hot start for both teams; BOTH shooting 71.4% from the field so far.

15:12: Trey Davis layup gives Richmond its first lead of the game, 12-11.

NOTE: Spiders going to need to slow down Peyton Aldrige (8pts, 4-4 FG), whose turnaround jumper regains lead for Davidson.

12:30 – They forgot about Dre … Davidson triple teams Terry Allen in the post, that gives Shawn’Dre wide open look at 3 from the corner. Richmond leads 19-14.

10:15 – Sharp-shooting from deep continues for Richmond … Cline (7pts) knocks down his first 3-point attempt of the game. Spiders lead 22-16.

6:05 – Cline shows off the versatility … Handles the fast break, finishes with the up-and-under AND ONE! Spiders lead 30-26.

4:15 – Terry Allen scores inside off great feed from Khwan Fore. Richmond’s 34-28 lead is Spiders’ largest of the game.

3:20 – T. Allen (6 pts, 5 reb) really getting involved with the offense now. Strong move through the lane puts Richmond ahead 36-30

1:15 – That was fun sequence to watch;  Jones to Allen to Cline for the easy 2. Richmond 40, Davidson 34.

:20 – Aldridge (13 pts, 6-8 FG) keeping Davidson in it. His game-high 13th point brings Wildcats within 4, 40-36.

15:45 – Davidson claws back to tie it at 45-all before Cline (19 pts) silences the crowd on the other end. Spiders lead 47-45.

14:30 – Sullivan 3 for Davidson. Wildcats on 11-2 run to re-take the lead, 48-47.

13:25 – BIG 3 by Marshall Wood puts Richmond back on top 50-48

12:38 – Who else? Cline left-handed finish down low. He has 9 of Richmond’s 12 second-half points. Spiders locked in 52-52 tie.

11:55 – Make that 11 of 14 second-half points … Cline scores AGAIN (23 pts), Spiders lead 54-52.

10:15 – Big swing there for Davidson. 6 point possession (3-pointer, foul after the shot leads to 2 FT)to take 57-56 lead.

9:50 – T. Allen baseline jumped – his first points of the half – puts Richmond back on top, 58-57.

NOTE: Poor shooting night from the stripe for the Spiders. 4-9 for the game.

8:47 – Trey Davis strong finish among two defenders, PLUS the foul. He completes 3-point play to give Richmond 62-57 lead.

6:50 – Davidson’s leading scorer, Aldridge (18 pts), 3 from the corner gives Wildcats the lead, 64-63.

NOTE: Did I mention Davidson is without its leading scorer, standout Jack Gibbs? Aldridge (18 pts), Reigel (14 pts) & Sullivan (16 pts) shouldering the scoring load.

6:05 – Sullivan old-fashion 3-point play gives Davidson its largest lead, 67-63.

4:03 – Richmond has gone ice cold from the field and charity stripe (1 for last 4, 6-12 for the game). Davidson on a 12-2 run, leads 69-64. Spiders still right there, but time is of the essence.

2:20 – T. Allen scores down low to bring Richmond within four, but Davidson answers on the other end. Wildcats lead by 6, 72-66.

1:55 – That could have been the dagger. Sullivan (14 of his 20 pts in 2nd half) pull-up 3 to give Davidson 75-66 lead.

1:32 – Richmond not going away quietly. Spiders get a quick 2, then force TO, Allen hits 2 of 2 from the line to make it a 5-point game, 75-70.

1:02 – T. Allen pulls down rebound, goes length of the floor before being fouled at the rim. Sinks both to make it a one possession game, 75-72 in favor of Davidson.

:31 – After Davidson hits 1 of 2 from the line, S. Jones moves down floor quickly before dishing to T. Allen for the layup. Spiders cut deficit to 2, 66-64.

:16 – S. Jones answers for Richmond after 2 FT for Davidson. Spiders trail 68-66. Need a quick foul.

:09 – S. Jones doing all he can. After Davidson hits 2 FT, Jones buries deep jumper, looked like a 3 but it’s ruled a 2. Ouch. Spiders trail 80-78.

:02 – Davidson FINALLY misses one from the line to give Richmond a chance. Spiders hurry down floor, but smart foul by Wildcats sends S. Jones to the line. He makes the first, misses the second intentionally, but Richmond is called for line violation. Spiders trail 81-79.

:01.6 – WOW! Richmond forces jump ball on ensuing inbounds pass, but possession arrow goes to Davidson. Spiders that close to getting a chance at tying it.
