Police search for driver who ran off after fatal accident in Prince William County

GAINESVIILE, Va. (AP) — Police in northern Virginia are looking for the driver of an SUV who they say ran off and left one of his passengers for dead after an accident.

Prince William County Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred before 3 a.m. Monday on U.S. 15 in Gainesville.

Police say the driver of a 2001 Toyota 4-Runner lost control and crashed his vehicle, which rolled. According to police, the driver then fled the scene.

A man who was in the backseat was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.

Police used dogs and helicopter to search for the driver, but haven’t yet located or identified him.
