Buckingham, Sherod ready to help lead young Spiders

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Spiders Head Coach Chris Mooney has a go-to line this preseason. He says the Spiders are young but not lacking in experience.

The Spiders feature only one senior who has been with the program in a previous year. Former walk-on Joe Kirby holds that distinction. Graduate transfer Jordan Madrid-Andrews is probably the oldest on the team, having transferred from Chicago State after a life-threatening accident, but Wednesday he was practicing with the true freshmen, trying to learn the Spiders’ Princeton-style offense. As a redshirt junior, guard Khwan Fore has the most playing time at U of R, but he’s more of the soft spoken type.

That leaves Henrico High School product De’Monte Buckingham and his AAU teammate and St. Christopher’s School graduate Nick Sherod. Both of them gained larger and larger roles with the team as their freshman seasons wore on, and both will be team leaders as sophomores.

Sherod said he and “Buck” feel more like juniors or seniors than sophomores, given their impact in during the 2016-2017 season. Buckingham said he and Nick are ready to be leaders this year and that Mooney has encouraged their leadership.
