Richmond’s Huesman says defense needs “nastiness”

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — By the time the Richmond Spiders take the field Saturday against Albany, they will have had two full weeks to sit and stew and think about their CAA-opening loss to Elon.

The cause of that loss, along with turnovers, was an inability to stop the run. Larger issues with the defense are the main reason the Spiders sit at 2-2 as opposed to 3-1 or 4-0. The Sam Houston State Bearkats threw all over the defense, and the Elon Phoenix ran all over them. The defense turned in solid performances against Howard and Colgate. Meanwhile the offense has been record-breaking in every game except the Colgate game.

Head Coach Russ Huesman and defensive back Micah Keels said the defense has the talent, and it needs to get some “nastiness” to get back its “swagger.”
