State Police: 2 injured in small plane crash in New Kent County

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — State Police are at the scene of a plane crash in New Kent County that happened Friday morning.

Police said in a statement that the crash happened at 11:15 a.m. when a small, fixed-wing, private aircraft crash landed into a field before striking a fence. This happened off Liberty Hall Road.

Two people were on board the plane at the time of the crash, according to police, the pilot and a passenger. One of the two was flown to VCU Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries. The other was also seriously injured, and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

A neighbor tells 8News he was inside his home when the plane crash landed in his front yard.

“I heard what I thought was a truck banging, I went to check on my daughter and she was fine but she said, ‘dad there’s a plane that just landed out in our horse field’ ” Robert Stroube explained.

Stroube says he spoke with one of the passengers who was walking around. He says part of his fence went through the plane’s windshield pinning the other passenger inside.

Stroube says his property was probably the best place in the area to make a crash landing and credits the pilot for his quick thinking.

“That’s what the man said that was walking around, he said the pilot he really did great to get it down in as good a condition as he got it down,” Stroube said. “I’m real thankful that it wasn’t worse than it was.”

The NTSB and FAA have been notified and the crash remains under investigation.
