Richmond students get free boat rides for good grades

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Summer school students from Carver and William Fox Elementary Schools beat the heat Tuesday on paddle boats in Byrd Park.

The concession owner is inviting kids to return when the summer is over. Honor roll students who show their report cards will get a free ride. Everyone else will get half off.

“It’s hard, but as long as you pay attention and keep doing stuff it’s actually a good thing and it’s easy,” said Javon Spearman, a student at Carver Elementary.

“My mom kept on promising me that she was going to take me here, but instead she took the whole entire school here and I’m thankful for that,” said Kaela Joyner. Her mother is the school’s principal.

The concession owner says this is a fun way to motivate students to do their best and give back to the community.
