Police identify Walgreens standoff suspect who apparently shot himself

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico County Police have identified the suspect who they say shot himself after a several hour long standoff at a Walgreens in Henrico’s East End Tuesday evening.

Police say that Gary Michael Haynes, 44, of Henrico, died at the scene.

The incident began sometime before 5:20 p.m. when police were called to the scene in the 4800 block of South Laburnum Avenue for reports of a robbery.

When officers arrived, they encountered Haynes who discharged a gun while still inside the building.

All patrons and employees were able to safely leave the business without incident.

Additional officers were called to the scene in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation. During negotiations, additional gunshots were heard from inside the building.

When police entered the building, they found Haynes suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

No Henrico County officers discharged their weapon during the incident.

8News spoke with a woman Tuesday night who said her mother was there when the incident began.

“She saw a guy jump over the countertop and she said she didn’t really know what was going on because she couldn’t really hear anything, but she said that is when she saw the gun,” Dicocia Thomas said.

Thomas’s mother then pulled out her phone and called police.

“She couldn’t believe what was going on, so she was the one who was actually guiding them, letting them know what she saw,” Thomas said.

Detectives are continuing their investigation.
