Local restaurant steps up to help Tobacco Co. employees

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Clean up is underway at the Tobacco Company restaurant in Shockoe Slip after a fire tore through the building’s interior.

Although one employee was treated for smoke inhalation, no other injuries were reported.

However, the restaurant announced Saturday that they will be closed until further notice.

In an effort to help Tobacco Company employees who are out of work while repairs are being made, Halligan Bar and Grill in Short Pump has offered them the opportunity to pick up shifts at their restaurant in Short Pump.

8News spoke with Shawn Gregory, the owner of Halligan Bar and Grill about the gesture.

“It was an awfully hot day yesterday so my heart went out immediately to the firefighters on the scene and then I thought that we could really try to help out those folks that were gonna be displaced by the fire,” Gregory said. “You know, fellow restaurant people, we need to stick together out here.”

Gregory told 8News that he previously had worked as a firefighter in Henrico for more than 20 years.
