HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The 39th Annual Hanover County Tomato Festival is set to kick off Friday evening at Pole Green Park.
The festival is an annual fundraiser for the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Marcy Durrer with Hanover County Parks and Recreation said the department has been preparing for this weekend since last year.
“We value this as a true community event,” Durrer said. “We have over 200 vendors. Lots of food vendors, children’s activities, they’re all free, put on by our community partners and our MaterFUN zone, of course. We’ll have Hanover tomatoes delivered fresh Saturday morning from Dodd’s acres farms.”
Most of the food venders have specialty dishes made with Hanover County Tomatoes
Rosemary’s is a crowd favorite and has been a staple part of the festival since 1998.
“Our most popular dish is the BLT featuring of course a Hanover tomato,” Chris Nelson with Rosemary’s said. “We also go fried green tomatoes. We do a Hanover tomato pie. Another item is a chicken salad stuffed Hanover tomato.”
Nelson said the best part about the festival is the people.
“They say 30 or 40,000 people come here every year and it’s just amazing the turnout,” Nelson said. “Everybody has a great attitude and is just happy to be here and it’s just a great occasion.”
The event is free to the public. Bring money to buy from vendors. The kick-off event Friday will be from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. On Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
