Amy Lacey’s Pet Corner: Virginia’s ‘dangerous dog law’ updated

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In this web-exclusive series, 8News Anchor Amy Lacey introduces us to pets across Central Virginia, highlighting everything from medical needs to trends and how you can be a better pet parent.

In this episode, Amy speaks with Rob Leinberger, the Animal Control Supervisor for Richmond Animal Care and Control, about Virginia’s updated ‘dangerous dog law.’

The former law classified all dangerous dogs together, but amendments made this year put them in two categories: those that attack a person and those that bite another animal like a dog or cat and whether there is significant injury and risk to the public.

Leinberger talks about the law and how it offers peace of mind to owners and helps law enforcement better investigate and classify the cases.
