RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Fireworks are a highlight of Independence Day, but they can also send people to the emergency room.
To keep you and your family safe this Fourth of July, there are some important safety rules to keep in mind.
First, make sure you know the local fireworks laws. For more information on Virginia laws, click here.
Never let young children light fireworks. There should always be an adult nearby to supervise the use of fireworks.
Don’t drink alcohol while lighting fireworks, and never light fireworks inside or shoot them into containers.
Just in case – have a bucket of water or a water hose nearby. If you think a firework is a dud, don’t relight it. Douse it with water instead.
To make sure pets stay safe and happy, leave them inside and check that they have updated ID tags just in case they run off.
