Police: Former Maryland coach charged with producing child porn has HIV

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (WRIC) — A former public school instructional assistant and coach in Maryland who told police he is HIV positive has been arrested for producing child porn and multiple counts of assault.

According to 8News affiliate ABC7 in Washington D.C., 30-year-old Carlos Deangelo Bell worked as an instructional assistant at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School in Waldorf and as a track coach at La Plata High School.

Police believe Bell sexually abused several males on school property, at his home and possibly other locations.

“If you don’t think I’ve asked myself thousands of times, since learning, you’re wrong,” Charles Co. Superintendent Kim Hill said during a press conference on Monday. “It is devastating to us that something like this could take place in a classroom, in a school building where adults are charged with taking care of children.”

As many as 10 middle school students were assaulted, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Seven of them were identified through videos, and authorities say they are actively searching for more victims.

“So far, we are aware of seven victims. Sadly, there may be more cases that we are not aware of at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.

Bell became the subject of an investigation in December after receiving a tip that suggested possible inappropriate behavior with a student while Bell was coaching track.

After searching Bell’s home, detectives found a home computer and other electronics that the Maryland State Police Crime Lab discovered contained data linking Bell to child porn production.

“Some of the evidence found included graphic images of Bell sexually assaulting victims,” Sheriff Troy Berry said.

Police are trying to determine if there are more victims and ask parents who may have had children come into contact with Bell to speak to give them a call. A special phone line was set up for this case, 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Police said in a press release that Bell admitted to testing HIV positive.

Information from WJLA was used in this report.
