Investigators: No leads 2 days after deadly Lake Anna boat crash

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Investigators are still looking for a third boat that was involved in a deadly crash that occurred over the weekend in Spotsylvania County.

The aftermath of the accident, which left two kids hospitalized and one man dead, was caught on video Saturday and showed the victim’s boat spinning on Lake Anna.

Two days later, key information is still missing as investigators continue to search for leads.

There were three boats involved in this incident and investigators are still trying to figure out who was driving one of them.

“It’s pretty sad and tragic,” said Erick Ponce, who was enjoying Lake Anna with his family on Monday. “People are just not careful. You’re here to celebrate. Not to go home in a body bag.”

The deadly crash killed 53-year-old Charles Bowen of Orange. Bowen’s boat tried to get out of the way of another boat coming in its direction. Bowen and another person were thrown from their boat, which proceeded to run over a line that was pulling two kids in inner tubes.

Now, investigators are still trying to figure out who was operating that third boat Bowen was trying to avoid, and whether they even know they were involved. There were still no leads in the case Monday afternoon.

“It’s a shame,” Ponce added.

Thomas Richardson spent Monday at the lake with his 9-year-old and 1-year-old grandkids. After the crash, he has some reservations.

“Especially when the jet skis were coming up here a little closer this morning,” he said. “You get concerned about that because if they lose control they could run into little innocent children playing.”
