COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The social media app, Snapchat, lets you share what you’re doing in that exact moment with all your friends. The new feature, Snap Map, makes it easier for them to find you.

Your location will be visible as soon as you open the app. Not just while you are snapping, allowing friends to see where users work, live, play and even go to school. The feature raises concerns with safety officials.

“Technology and Snapchat nowadays is the modern day public playground. Parents need to monitor what their kids are doing,” said Franklin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Marc Gofstein.

Police say it’s a feature that predators are drawn to. It has the ability to give out the location of your child’s school if they post at school and even where they are hanging out with friends.

WCMH spoke with parents who have mixed feelings about the new feature.

“I think it is always good to have the ability to know where kids are. So I don’t think it is a bad thing. I think there are other things about Snapchat that are probably worth more attention,” said parent, David Rickert.

“We have not allowed her to have a phone yet just for those reasons. We don’t want anybody to be able to have access to her. We trust her completely, but we don’t we don’t want other individuals who you never know what their intentions are,” says parent, Kerri Martin.

If you don’t want your location shared, make sure it’s turned off. Simply go to the snap map feature in the app. There are three settings to choose from, click “ghost mode” which will make your location only visible to you.

HOW TO ENABLE “GHOST MODE”

  1. Pinch the screen when the app is open and this will load the map.
  2. When you do it for the first time, it should ask you if you want to activate “ghost mode.”
  3. If it doesn’t, tap the icon in the top right corner, where you will be able to check a box to enable “ghost mode.”
