Culpeper man drowns at Orange County lake

ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 24-year-old Culpeper man drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming at a beach at Lake of the Woods in Orange County, Virginia.

Police said that the incident happened sometime before 4 p.m. which is when the Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a possible drowning.

Lake of the Woods is located in Locust Grove, Virginia.

When they arrived they found William Dixon III who they say drowned while swimming at the main beach located beside the Lake of the Woods clubhouse.

Dixon was there swimming with his fiance and other family members as part of a July 4 celebration.

Authorities said Dixon went to the deeper part of the designated swimming area where he became distressed and eventually lost his ability to stay above water.

He was found submerged about 8 minutes after he went under.

Lake of the Woods Rescue Crews attempted CPR, but were unsuccessful in their attempts to resuscitate Dixon.
