RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Commonwealth University’s news Institute for Contemporary Art will open later than originally planned. It is now set to open in the Spring of 2018.
The opening was pushed back because of a delay in the construction schedule. Once it’s finished, the building’s climate needs to be adjusted before art can be moved in. In a letter, Institute Director Lisa D. Freiman writes:
Today we announced that the ICA will open in Spring 2018, due to a revised schedule for the completion of construction. This is not unusual for new building projects, given the complexity of these undertakings, and it was imperative to us that we take the time necessary to create the most optimal opening experience for all of our constituents. We are looking forward to welcoming the VCU and Richmond communities when we launch the ICA this Spring, and will continue to mount initiatives and programs in the community prior to the opening that are not contingent on the building.
We are so grateful for the deep support we’ve received from all of the friends of the ICA: donors, artists, lenders, partners, corporate sponsors, and all future visitors. We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to sharing additional details about our opening programs and our inaugural exhibition, Declaration, later this summer.
Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with our staff with any questions.”
