Man found dead after Nottoway County house fire

NOTTOWAY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police and Nottoway County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that happened at a home on East Courthouse Road near Blackstone early Monday morning.

Blackstone Fire Chief Dion Tomer says a neighbor called 911 at about 3:38 a.m. after hearing a propane tank explode. When crews arrived on the scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Crews from Blackstone, Crewe, and Burkeville were forced to fight the flames from the outside due to the roof of the home caving in.

After 40 minutes, firefighters were able to get inside the home where they found a man dead in a bedroom of the home.

The man’s body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for identification and a cause of death.

According to Tomer, this is the first fire fatality of the year in Nottoway County.
