4-year-old girl safely located; suspect taken into custody

UPDATE: Kimberly Long has been safely located in Rockingham County, according to the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police. Joel Long was also taken into custody without incident.

Charges and the relationship between Kimberly and Joel remain unclear.

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WRIC/WAVY) — Police are looking for the man they say abducted a girl in southwest Virginia.

They say 4-year-old Kimberly Long is in extreme danger. The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office says 26-year-old Joel Long likely abducted her.

The two were last seen at View Drive in Smyth County around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police have not said how they are related.

They may be driving a 1998 maroon colored Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck heading towards the Roanoke area.

Police describe Joel Long as 6’01, 180 pounds, hazel eyes, and brown hair. He was last seen wearing an orange t-shirt and denim shorts. Kimberly Long is described by police as 3’00, 38 pounds, hazel eyes, and blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a black tank top and denim shorts.
