RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Fire Department battled a blaze at a Walgreens in Richmond’s Southside early Tuesday morning.
Crews responded just after 5:30 a.m. at the Walgreens located at 5122 Hull Street Road near Warwick Road.
Richmond Fire says no one was inside the building at the time of the blaze.
It took crews just about an hour to get the fire marked under control. The exterior of the building did receive extensive damage.
When 8News arrived on the scene, flames were ripping through the roof and smoke could be smelled from a couple blocks away.
Moribelle Vega, a former employee of the Walgreens store, said she was heading downtown to drop off her husband at work when she saw the flames coming from the building.
“‘Oh my God!’ This is my old house, my first job here in Richmond when I moved from Miami,” Vega said. “‘I need to call 911.'”
Vega said no one was inside or outside of the store when she saw the flames. She said there’s no telling what caused the fire, but the storms from last night could have caused an electrical problem.
“I don’t know how it’s inside. I don’t see the damages, but it’s pretty bad and pretty sad,” Vega said, “for my co-workers and the community because this is one of the Walgreens that they have a lot of the Hispanic community around, you know, they shop here.”
Warwick Road remains closed as crews continue to work.
Fire investigators are on scene to try and determine what sparked the fire.
