Flood waters ravage Henrico youth baseball organization

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)  —  Floodwaters raged through a Henrico youth baseball facility just days before it was set to host two big tournaments.

Last Friday, the creek near Lakeside Youth Baseball overflowed its banks and water poured onto the fields and into the concession stand and equipment room.

“It’s just really difficult to comprehend how much damage there was down here,” Lakeside Youth Baseball Concession Director Joe Waple explained. “It doesn’t look so bad today, but it was heartbreaking.”

The high water destroyed major appliances in the concession stand and ruined hundreds of dollars worth of food.

It also saturated multiple sets of catchers gear and baseball gloves inside the equipment room.

“We’re hoping we can salvage some of it, but catchers gloves, catchers gear, it just got soaked,” Waple added.

The timing is terrible. Lakeside was scheduled to host two All-Star tournaments beginning on Wednesday.

Monday afternoon, however, officials told 8News the tournament will not be held at Lakeside.

The league is still looking to replace baseball gloves and catchers gear.
