RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 8News handed FeedMore a check Friday morning for the total number of meals we raised through our ‘100K Meals’ campaign this year.
Thanks to schools, organizations, businesses and people in the Central Virginia community, we may soon have to change the name of the fundraiser to the ‘200K Meals’ campaign.
Partnering with Puritan Cleaners, 8News was able to raise 168,206 meals for children in need this summer.
Tim McDermott with FeedMore says this is the time of year when meals are so desperately needed.
“There’s 53,000 children that are hungry across Central Virginia,” McDermott explained. “Summer, in particular, is a challenging time for them. Many of those children are fed well during the school year, but in the summer they don’t have access to the schools and the nutrition that comes with that.
“So in particular, this campaign is tremendous to be able to look out for some of those children as we go through the summer months.”
Since the campaign began, viewers have helped raise more than 1.13 million meals for FeedMore.
