Police ID pedestrian fatally struck in Powhatan

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 79-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Powhatan County Friday night.

The accident occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Anderson Highway (Route 60) and Academy Road.

According to police, a 2008 Honda CRV was traveling east on Route 60 when a male pedestrian stepped out into the travel lane from the right shoulder. Police say the CRV was unable to avoid the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 79-year-old Merle  M. White of Powhatan.

The female driver of the CRV was not injured. Police say no charges will be filed.
