Henrico Fire crews battle fire at New Bridge Learning Center

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Fire crews battled a fire at a Henrico County school building early Thursday morning, forcing it to close for the day.

Henrico Fire officials say shortly after 4 a.m., firefighters were called to New Bridge Learning Center located on Nine Mile Road for the report of a structure fire.

“First-arriving police officers reported smoke coming from the building,” Henrico Fire’s press release said. “When fire units arrived shortly thereafter, they confirmed the smoke conditions and immediately went inside to attempt to quickly locate and extinguish the fire.”

The fire was found to be located on the second floor, and was extinguished with a combination of fire department hose lines and the automatic sprinkler system installed in the facility, Henrico officials said. A burst water pipe was also found during the search of the building for potential victims.

It took fire crews one hour to bring the fire under control.

There were no injuries reported and the Henrico Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate.

Each day, 106 students attend Pre-K in the building.

Andy Jenks with Henrico County Public Schools issued the following statement:

New Bridge Learning Center will be closed on Thursday, January 12, 2017. This means all pre-school and Elementary Intervention classes at New Bridge Learning Center will be cancelled. Staff members will receive further instructions from their administrators about alternate working arrangements. Further updates will be shared later today. Today’s School Board work session at 1:30 p.m. in the New Bridge Auditorium will take place as scheduled.”
