RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — During the busiest delivery week of the year, 8News got a behind-the-scenes tour of Richmond’s United States Postal Service facility.
Senior Manager Sherry Harper is tasked with making sure everything runs smoothly at Richmond’s postal plant, which is projecting 2.3 million deliveries this week.
“You know we plan ahead for it,” Harper said. “Happens every year.”
At a facility the size of 12 football fields, 1,100 full-time employees are getting back-up for the holidays.
“We hired 180 this year to assist us with our workload,” Harper explained.
The postal service is projecting a 12 percent increase in package volume this holiday season, about 750 million packages nationwide.
Needless to say, the machines at the facility will get a workout.
“Each machine is equivalent to a football field, so it’s a big piece of equipment,” Harper said.
Richmond’s facility is one of only a handful that have three parcel sorters under one roof.
“You see a raw product go in and a finished product go out. The carrier actually just takes it to the street. They don’t even have to touch it,” Harper explained.
