1 dead, another seriously injured after vehicle strikes tree in Essex County

ESSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One man is dead and another person is seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash in Essex County that occurred early Sunday morning.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was driving along Route 618 when he ran off the road to the right and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire and a passenger in the vehicle thrown from the vehicle.

The driver died at the scene, but the passenger has been transported via med-flight to MCV Hospital in Richmond with serious injuries.

The incident took place on Route 618, which is also called Sunnyside Road, about a half-mile east of Route 650, which is also called Hickory Hill Road.

The deceased has been transported to the office of the medical examiner for examination and identification.

The incident happened after 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

Virginia State Police Master Trooper A. Allen is investigating the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
