Armed robbery prompts VCU alert

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Officials at Virginia Commonwealth University issued an alert after an armed robbery on the 400 block of Gilmer Street took place on Monday night.

Richmond Police are investigating the robbery and VCU Police say that they will increase patrols.

VCU sent the following message:

To the VCU and VCU Health communities,

In compliance with the provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1988 Virginia Commonwealth University is giving notice of an armed robbery.

Reported Offense:  On 12/12/2016 at approximately 10:05 PM a robbery occurred in the 400 block of Gilmer Street. Richmond Police is investigating this incident. Both VCU and Richmond Police are increasing patrols.

Brief description of how the crime took place:  Both victims were walking together and southbound on Gilmer Street with the two suspects walking in front of them.  Without warning, the suspects turned around, produced firearms, and demanded the victims’ possessions.  When one of the victims tried to run, they were tackled by one of the suspects, struck, and then their property was taken from their person.

Suspect/s: Suspect #1: Black male, wearing a grey hoodie and blue jeans.  Approximately 6’ tall and with a slim build.  Suspect #2:  Black male, wearing an orange and blue hoodie and possibly also wearing jeans or sweat pants.  Approximately 5’8” tall and also with a slim build.  Both suspects possessed firearms.

It can be assumed that conditions continue to exist that may pose a threat to members and guests of the community. Police have increased patrols in this area. The Richmond Police Department is leading the investigation.
