RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As Richmond’s crime rate continues to climb, the city’s police department is asking for additional funding.
The Richmond City Council took steps to address that concern Monday night, voting unanimously to approve an extra $1.6 million for the department.
No one who attended the meeting spoke against giving the department more money to hire more officers.
The increase in funding should allow the department to recruit roughly 40 more officers, something RPD Chief Alfred Durham has been pleading for.
Durham said the additional funding is only the first step toward getting his department where it needs to be from a staffing standpoint. His next battle will be fighting for more money to raise salaries and keep officers in the city.
