RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Leland Melvin was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. Melvin says he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Arthur Ashe growing up but after becoming a researcher at NASA he soon realized he wanted to be an astronaut.
The University of Richmond graduate started on that path and that’s when he came into contact with astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth. Melvin says Glenn may be remembered for his accomplishments in space and as a U.S. Senator but he hopes people remember how he carried himself as he made those historic accomplishments.
“Those are all wonderful and beautiful things but I think the testimony of this man, his legacy, is for kids to see that you can do this with grace, you can do this with honor and you can do this in a way that is kind and empathetic and help human kind be better,” said Melvin.
