1 killed in Powhite Parkway crash in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred on Powhite Parkway in Chesterfield County.

The crash occurred at 4:50 a.m. and caused delays along Route 76, also called Powhite Parkway, near the Courthouse Road exit in both directions.

Police said the incident occurred when the driver was traveling southbound in a Buick and ran off of the road, striking the guardrail before slamming into a sign pole. This caused the vehicle to catch on fire.

The driver died at the scene of the accident.

The extent of the fire has made it difficult to identify the driver or vehicle, but police are currently attempting to run the tag on the vehicle’s license plate.

The body of the deceased person is being sent to the medical examiner’s office.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and that they will release the victim’s name once they have been identified and the next of kin have been notified.

State trooper S.C. Albert is investigating.
