WASHINGTON (WRIC) – Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine (D.) told the Senate on Wednesday that the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Medicaid are essential programs for Virginians.
Kaine is pushing to keep the Affordable Care Act available for the 20 million people who have coverage. President-elect Donald Trump says he will work with Republicans in Congress to amend or replace it.
Kaine admits the ACA needs work.
“Prices of prescription drugs, I think there’s work to do on that. Some of the premium increases, I think there’s work to do on that,” he explained.
Kaine is also praising the Senate for passing the 21st Century Cures Act. The bill includes funding for medical research, plus $1 billion in funding to fight opioid abuse, which has been declared a public health emergency in Virginia.
Kaine said the following in a statement on Wednesday:
“Thanks to this bipartisan legislation, our nation’s top researchers will have additional resources they need to find cures and treatments for the devastating diseases that touch us all.”
The bill now heads to the president’s desk.
