Shots fired at woman’s car in Petersburg while children inside

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Petersburg Police are investigating after shots were fired at a woman’s car while children were inside the vehicle Tuesday night.

“I heard over probably 13 to 17 shots but my car was shot about 8 or 9 times,” said Christine Wesson.

Wesson says she can’t believe how close she, as well as her eight- and four-year-old daughters and three-year-old nephew, came to death.

She says she was waiting on a friend when two men approached her car in an alley near St. James Street around 9 p.m.

“The kids and I looked to see what was going on. One guy got out. He had a white bandana around his face,” said Wesson.

Wesson says the men exited their vehicle and started shooting at her car.

“My car was in park. I took the car and put it in drive, I ran up on the curve and tried to get out of there as fast as I could,” said Wesson.

Wesson drove to Family Dollar on Halifax Street to call 911.

“If I had my kids buckled up in seat belts. Bullets would have hit them in the back of the head or the back of their neck,” Wesson explained.

The investigation is ongoing.

“There is a detective assigned. They are actively trying to speak with Ms. Wesson and also actively trying to go talk to neighbors,” said Sgt. Greg Giest.
