Third grader in DD2 brings gun to school

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — On Monday, December 5, a student at Newington Elementary School notified his teacher when he discovered there was a gun in his backpack, according to Summerville Police.

Through the police investigation, it was determined that the student did not place the 9mm Smith & Wesson into his backpack and it was mistakenly placed in there by his mother while she was carrying multiple items around the home.

The student has not been charged by the Summerville Police Department, but instead, commended him on notifying his teacher.

The gun did not have ammunition in the chamber, according to police.

Dorchester District 2 spokesperson Pat Raynor said the child is a third-grader.
