Five separate medical malpractice lawsuits filed against McGuire VA Medical Center

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — An 8News investigation has uncovered five medical malpractice lawsuits filed against the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond. 8News Investigative Reporter Parker Slaybaugh was first to break this story Friday Night.

All of the suits allege medical malpractice of different types. All 5 plaintiffs are represented by the RawlsMcNelis Law firm.

9aca52d033014374868ad9dfff49727f“We’ve never had five cases in the same court at the same time,” explained Brewster Rawls, who is representing the plaintiffs.

“That’s very unusual; we do these cases all over the country and I don’t think we’ve had a situation where we’ve had two in the same jurisdiction at any given time, and that’s really over the past 20 years.”

In one of the cases, an 81-year-old man who was being treated at the VA for dementia ended up breaking his femur. He died less than a month later from a bowel obstruction. His family is seeking $2,000,000.

“It’s really not clear why he broke his leg and it wasn’t detected,” Rawls said.

In three other cases, the plaintiffs are seeking $2.5 million dollars each. What allegedly went wrong is different in all three cases.

In the fifth lawsuit, the plaintiff is seeking $10 million.

In this case, a 34-year-old  army veteran says he had complications after a reverse vasectomy he received at the VA. He alleges he has permanent neurological damage and is unable to conceive his own biological children.
