Randolph-Macon drops close one to William Peace 72-68

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) tallied 18 points off the bench as the Randolph-Macon men’s basketball team was nipped by William Peace 72-68 Wednesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Senior Boris Ngundji (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) made a layup with 2:49 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets (1-4) a 68-67 lead, but it would be the final points in the game for R-MC. The Pacers (5-1) made a layup with 2:01 left to take the lead for good at 69-68. WPU hit a pair of three throws with 1:45 remaining and added their final free throw with 3.9 seconds left to secure the victory.

R-MC trailed 9-7 early before a 14-2 spurt gave the home team a 21-11 advantage midway through the opening half. The Pacers cut the deficit to four at 21-17 before the Yellow Jackets took a 40-32 lead at intermission. Juniors Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Jermaine Johnson (Akron, Ohio/St. Christopher’s) both had nine points in the first half for R-MC.

WPU used a 14-6 run in the first six minutes of the second half to knot the score at 46-46. The Pacers had a layup with 12 minutes left to give the visitors their first second-half lead at 52-50. Taylor nailed a three-pointer with 11:20 remaining to give R-MC a 53-52 advantage. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way until the final free throw for the Pacers with 3.9 seconds left made the final a four-point margin.

There were 11 ties and 10 lead changes in the game, including eight ties and nine lead changes in the second half.

Johnson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Ngundji and sophomore Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) both had six boards for the Yellow Jackets.

Senior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) had six points and led R-MC with five assists.

Ryan Emfinger had 17 points and nine rebounds for WPU.

Randolph-Macon begins ODAC play on Saturday, Dec. 3 at home at 2 p.m. against Emory & Henry.
