Suspect injured in Chesterfield officer-involved shooting near Waffle House

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 21-year-old Colonial Heights man was taken to the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Chesterfield County early Thursday morning.

Chesterfield Police said shortly after 5 a.m., officers responded to a robbery in progress at the APlus convenience store on the 9900 block of Chester Road.

Upon arrival, the officers were searching for the suspect. Police said one of the officers encountered the suspect near the Waffle House adjacent to the convenience store. During that encounter, police say the suspect fired at the officer and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect, who has been identified as 21-year-old Dante Lakeith Wilkes of the 15700 block of Tinsberry Place, then fled on foot a short distance and hid in a wood line adjacent to the area. Officers quickly set up a perimeter, located and apprehended the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No officer was injured during the incident.

Wilkes has been charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer, robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
