DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The journey of Kaleb ‘Baby Buns’ Graves started just over a year ago, when Dana and Arkell Graves found out they were going to have a baby.
It was a huge surprise after 17 years of trying, so Dana popped a picture of her ultrasound along with a package of buns into the oven and secretly captured her husband’s reaction on camera. The video went viral.
But her pregnancy quickly turned complicated. Dana was hospitalized and struggled to hold onto her baby until it safe to give birth. Doctors ultimately delivered little Kaleb by C-section at 23 weeks because his mother’s life was at risk.
Kaleb Arkell Graves weighed just 13 ounces when he was born. He was so fragile and tiny that doctors told Dana and Arkell their child’s odds were grim. But the Graves prayed and asked God for a miracle. They got one.
In October, “Baby Buns” finally made the journey home after 356 days in the NICU. He now weighs more than 13 pounds and is thriving at home with his family.
8News has been following Kaleb’s journey from the beginning, helping people around the world do the same. Dana and Arkell say they are forever grateful for the prayers and support they’ve received from thousands of people who have never even met young Kaleb.
