Henrico County man arrested, charged with malicious wounding of baby daughter

HENRICO COUNTY, Va, (WRIC) — Henrico Police are investigating how a child in her father’s care ended up in the hospital.

23-year-old Randy Watkins is behind bars accused of maliciously wounding and neglecting his one-year-old daughter. Watkins was arrested Thursday after his daughter was admitted to the hospital with suspicious injuries.

Friends and family didn’t want to speak on camera about the incident but said that Henrico Police got it wrong and they believe Watkins is innocent.

“This has been a big misunderstanding,” the victim’s aunt, who wished to remain anonymous, said. “He would not do anything to harm that little girl.”

Henrico Police arrested Watkins Thursday at a residence on Thalia Crescent near Shirleydale Avenue.

“I know Randy, a lot of people know Randy, and people will tell you there is no way he did anything or ever thought about doing anything to a child,” a friend of Watkins said.

8News spoke with a friend of Watkins.

“I know Randy, a lot of people know Randy, and people will tell you there is no way he did anything or ever thought about doing anything to a child,” the friend said.

The family told 8News that the one-year-old is still recovering in the hospital.

Tre Carrington, a neighbor, said that he is happy to hear the baby is recovering but hates to hear that such an incident happened in the first place.

“It is good to hear that the baby is okay and is doing better and that it is nothing life-threatening, but at the same time, it is not right. You don’t want to hear about kids getting injured,” Carrington said. “If that is the situation, it is just messed up.”

Henrico Police said the investigation is on-going.
