Sheltering Arms, VCU Health System partner for rehab hospital project

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Sheltering Arms Hospital and VCU Health System plan to build a new regional rehabilitation hospital in Goochland County.

The new hospital, which will be named Sheltering Arms Rehab Institute, will combine the current inpatient rehabilitation programs of Sheltering Arms and VCU Health to provide care for people who have had a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury or similar illnesses and injuries.

The 114-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility will be located on a 25-acre site in the West Creek Medical Park.

Sheltering Arms and VCU Health signed an agreement that created the joint venture in May. In September, a letter of intent was filed with the Virginia Department of Health announcing plans to obtain a Certificate of Public Need. The COPN application will be submitted to the DOH by the end of this month, and a decision is expected by early summer 2017.

No word yet how much the facility will cost. The hospital is expected to open sometime in 2020.
