School community hosts blood drive in honor of student battling cancer

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — A school community in Hanover County held a blood drive Thursday in honor of a 5-year-old student battling aggressive brain cancer.

Sawyer Perkins has successfully had two tumors removed and is now undergoing treatment.

Her school, Pearson’s Corner, partnered with the American Red Cross and organized the drive, which was held Thursday and drew people from all over Mechanicsville to the Ashcreek Community Clubhouse to give blood.

The Perkins family say they are grateful for the community’s continuous support.

“Sawyer luckily has never had to get blood during her treatment, but so many of her battle buddies have to get it daily and weekly. They are always in need of blood.”
