RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Bronco Mendenhall Era signaled the end of the Matt Johns era at UVA, or so we thought. Virginia’s first-year head coach named Kurt Benkert the Cavaliers’ starter in August, and Johns has played sparingly since then and primarily is a holder on the field goal team. Saturday against Miami, though, Benkert turned the ball over one too many times and Johns entered the game, his last one at Scott Stadium. This coming Saturday, Johns will get the start at Georgia Tech. Mendenhall said Johns has earned the opportunity and that the change would be beneficial to Benkert’s growth.
Virginia Tech had the ACC Coastal in its grasp Saturday and let it go along with a few too many Georgia Tech ball carriers. Now, Virginia Tech will have to win at home against Virginia or rely on North Carolina State to upset North Carolina in order to clinch the division. In the meantime, the Hokies travel to Notre Dame Saturday. It will be a cool experience for the team and players, and Hanover Hawk alumnus Sam Rogers says they are looking forward to it.
