NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A firefighter hurt his hand while working to put out the flames in an overnight fire after crews saved two residents.

Crews raced to a fourplex on West Little Creek Road in Norfolk near Wards Corner around 1:00 Monday morning.  Firefighters say the fire spread from the first floor to the second.

Three residents got out safely. Crews had to rescue two people. They raised a ladder to the second floor to get one of them.

One firefighter hurt his hand putting out the flames. He has a minor injury and should be OK.

One resident told WRIC sister station WAVY off-camera, he was sleeping when the fire started, but woke up when firefighters banged on his upstairs window. Crews pulled from that window to safety.

Investigators say there is smoke damage inside the home. They’re working to find out how the fire started.
