1 dead, 3 injured in shooting near a California polling location

AZUSA, Calif. (CNN) — CNN is reporting that one person is dead and three others are injured after a shooting outside of a polling location in a town near Los Angeles.

The shooting took place outside of the Memorial Park North Recreation Center, which was a polling place in Azusa, California, 30 miles outside of Los Angeles.

One voter told CNN he was inside when he heard a bunch of shots ring out and people from outside run. Shortly thereafter a lock down of the poll commenced.

“[A] massive shooting is happening and the police have told us to stay indoors. We are currently on locked down,” the man told CNN.

Another voter who was inside the poll also spoke with CNN.

“At first, I thought it was construction, but people came running into the room saying they see a guy with a bulletproof vest and a white shirt. As of right now, they just have us in the voting room and are trying to keep us calm,” the woman told CNN.

According to CNN, officials are not allowing people in or out of the polling location, but people are still being allowed to vote while they wait. Reportedly, officials are not giving updates inside the building in an effort to avoid scaring kids inside.

CNN reports that about 30 people remain inside the locked down polling location, and about 15-20 children were evacuated from a gym in the building.

Shots were not fired inside the polling station.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter transported at least two shooting victims to a nearby hospital.
