AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — This week the Good Morning Richmond crew is going on the job where you live to try out for a day all sorts of different careers.
8News anchors Whitney Harris and Amanda Malkowski went to Avery’s Branch Farm in Amelia to see if they have what it takes to work the land.
Whitney and Amanda enjoyed feeding the calves, chickens and turkeys.
“It’s fulfilling to come in at the end of the day and just feel like you’ve done a lot that day.” Harrison Alexander, the farm owner’s son told 8News.
Owner Joy Alexander said her family opened the farm nine years ago, and there has never been a dull moment since.
“We usually get our day started around six, and we start with milking,” Joy said. “Simultaneously some feeding of the calves is happening. Generally, the guys will start gathering eggs from the chickens … the pigs will be fed.”
They produce fresh milk and eggs, every day.
“It’s fulfilling to come in at the end of the day and just feel like you’ve done a lot that day,” Harrison Alexander, Joy’s son told 8News.
The Alexander family thinks Amanda and Whitney did pretty well.
“Obviously, anyone who has to get up as early as you girls do to do your job … Also, your flexibility is a huge asset in farming because you have to do different segments, different jobs. I think you’re well suited for farming,” Joy said.
