Champions Tour golfer Fred Funk teaches Church Hill Academy kids

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The PGA Champions Tour is in Richmond this week for the Dominion Charity Classic, which takes place Friday through Sunday at the Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.

Fred Funk is one of the golfers who will be taking part. Wednesday, Funk was playing in the pro-am tournament, and Skip Long was his caddie. Long is the principal at Church Hill Academy, a private religious high school in the East End of Richmond. Church Hill Academy started a golf program last year, and Long spent much of the day not just carrying Funk’s clubs but also telling him about the program.

Halfway through the round, Funk decided he had to visit.

Thursday, Funk arrived at The Crossings Golf Club in Glen Allen to meet with ten or so African-American teenage boys to share his wisdom and experience about the game of golf. Funk taught them the rudiments of a swing and the group laughed a lot. The kids were happy to get some free lessons from a golfer that once shot a 60 for 18 holes, and Funk was happy to spread the game to some very willing pupils.
