Hanover County man leads police on chase before crashing into utility pole

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Hanover County man is in the hospital today after crashing his car while fleeing police who had pulled him for a traffic violation.

The incident happened late Tuesday night when James Walters, 52, of Mechanicsville, was pulled over at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Walters initially stopped before putting his vehicle in reverse, crashing into the deputy’s vehicle and fleeing the scene. Another officer then began pursuing Walters.

Traveling westbound on Mechanicsville Turnpike, Walters then tried to make a right turn onto Elm Drive, but lost control and collided with a utility pole at the intersection.

This, in turn, led the pursuing deputy to collide with the suspect’s vehicle.

When deputies approached the vehicle it became apparent that Walters required medical aid, which the immediately gave. The Hanover Fire and EMS were summoned to the scene and transported him to VCU Medical Center.

As a result of the incident, Walters has been charged with Driving Under the Influence, Driving after being declared a Habitual Offender, Eluding , Hit and Run, Obstruction of Justice, Failure to Obey a Stop Sign, and Assault on Law Enforcement.
