RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The L.C. Bird Skyhawks have exactly one slip up on their record this season: a 21-14 loss to Manchester. It’s no coincidence that running back Shedrick McCall was not 100% in that game, as he’s the engine behind the Skyhawks’ ground and pound attack.
Friday, McCall dominated the Huguenot Skyhawks to the tune of 209 yards rushing and four touchdowns in Bird’s 70-8 win. McCall stands 6’1″ 245 pounds, and yet earlier in the season Head Coach David Bedwell says he wasn’t using his size.
“Sometimes running backs think they need to make five or six moves before they get to the line of scrimmage,” Bedwell said, adding that after showing McCall his dancing on film the senior bound for Old Dominion has since improved his running style.
Now, McCall says he looks forward to contact.
“Every time we play someone there’s one or two guys who have something to say,” McCall said. “I try to go after them, and then I give them that look after I run them over.”
Bird plays at James River Friday night and then it’s on to the 5A South playoffs, where the Skyhawks are likely to be a #2 seed on the Richmond side of the bracket.
