CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two people were hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash on I-95 north in Caroline County early Tuesday morning.
A Virginia State Police spokesperson said the crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. when a Ford F-150 crossed over from the right lane to the middle lane, striking the back of a 2016 Freightliner box truck. This caused both vehicles to go off the roadway and into the woods.
Authorities say a passenger in the box truck was sleeping in the sleeper birth of the truck at the time of the crash and was entrapped by a tree and furniture that had shifted during the crash. They were later flown to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the 2016 Ford F-150, Merle L. Ray, 62, of Pennsylvania, was issued a summons for Reckless Driving. There was one passenger in the Ford F-150 who was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said driver fatigue is being considered a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
