CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Friday afternoon Virginia Cavaliers head coach Tony Bennett announced redshirt junior forward Austin Nichols has been suspended for the two remaining scrimmages and the season opener at UNC-Greensboro on Friday, November 11th.

Nichols has been suspended for violating team rules, according to a press release.

Nichols transferred from Memphis to Charlottesville and sat out the 2015-2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The 6’9″ forward is expected to start and be a major contributor for the Hoos this year once he is eligible to play.

Before coming to Virginia, Nichols started 60 games for the Memphis Tigers, 34 as a freshman; was named All-American Athletic Conference first team in 2014-2015 as well as ranking third nationally in blocks (3.4 per game) while leading his team in scoring (13.3 ppg) that year. He was also selected as the AAC Rookie of the Year in the 2013-2014 season, and was Gatorade Tennessee Player of the Year in 2012-2013.
